From TUF to the UFC, Josh Koscheck has made the transition from reality TV star to a rising star in what has to be the most stacked and competitive division the UFC has, the UFC Welterweight division. Josh is now preparing to take on another rising star in thesame division, the BJJ fighter Drew Fickett at Ultimate Fight Night 2. The event is on October 3, and will be shown live on Spike TV. These two fighters are coming off wins at Ultimate Fight Night, in which by a weird occurrence, they finished their opponents with rear naked chokes early in the first round. Koscheck defeated striker Pete Spratt, in what was a dominating performance from start to finish. I caught up with Josh for a brief chat as he was preparing with the rest of AKA for his fight with upcoming at Ultimate Fight Night 2.Kakutougi: What was your strategy going into your fight with Pete Spratt?
Koscheck: I wanted to basically ground and pound Pete Spratt. I wanted to take him down and get him out of his game before he could get going. I wanted to put him into my world, and basically beat him.
Kakutougi: How did you feel after the fight?
Koscheck: I didn’t think that it would be that easy, and I thought that Pete would be able to give me a better test then he did. I feel good about the way it went because I came out of the fight untouched and it’s always great to come out of a fight uninjured; being able to train right away after the fight.
Kakutougi: Did you feel that you needed to improve on anything after the fight?
Koscheck: I feel that there is a lot that I need to improve on since I’ve only been training about a year in MMA. I need to improve in every aspect, if I ever want to be at the caliber of Matt Hughes or Georges St. Pierre.
Kakutougi: When did you find out that you would be fighting Drew Fickett on October 3?
Koscheck: I was getting ready to leave town because of the long weekend and while I was eating dinner, I got the call from my agent asking if I wanted to fight Fickett on October 3, and I said lets do it.
Kakutougi: What are your feelings about him?
Koscheck: Drew Fickett has a great ground game and good striking. I think he is an average fighter with a lot of experience in MMA.
Kakutougi: Are you working on anything specific for your fight with Fickett?
Koscheck: I’m just training normally as I still haven’t really watched much tape on him. I’m just working hard on my BJJ, boxing and kickboxing in preparation for my fight.
Kakutougi: Do you feel any extra pressure since you are coming off the TUF show?
Koscheck: I feel that there is a lot of pressure from the fans because they expect us to win and to compete at our highest level. For me, there isn’t really a lot of pressure because I always do my best when I compete.
Kakutougi: Did you ever think that you would get this much exposure because of TUF?
Koscheck: I didn’t really think that the show would be as big of a hit then what it actually was. The reason that the show got so popular was because of word of mouth from all the fans by telling all their friends to check out the show and they got them hooked. One the thing that surprises me is the type of fans that the show got, some people that you would never expect to watch the show did and in the long run it was a good thing.
Kakutougi: Has your life changed in any way since TUF aired?
Koscheck: I’m making more money then I was before I did the show, and it’s opened up a lot opportunities for me to do things that I normally wouldn’t have been able to do because of the exposure that I got on the show.
Kakutougi: Where do you see yourself in one year?
Koscheck: To be honest, I never look that far ahead because I think that I would lose track of what I’m trying to accomplish at the present time, and what I have to do to get better now. I just take it day by day and worry on how to get better in the present as opposed to the future.
Kakutougi: What is your ultimate goal in MMA?
Koscheck: I want to win a belt and to be the best in sport, whether it is at 185lbs or at 170lbs. I just want to show that I am the best fighter at the weight class.
Kakutougi: Thanks very much for your time Josh, and best of luck against Drew Fickett.
